Memo Gate - Response of PPP Government

Today I was amazed by two developments with respect to Memo Gate Case. First, DG ISI resignation demand by “friends of PPP” seconded by opposition leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan (for his own reasons). Second development was the news that government’s response to SCP includes reference of Mr. Omar Waraich’s article regarding ISI chief asking permission from Arabs to overthrow PPP government.

I was really amazed. While PPP is not even able to handle current situation, there was no need to open a new front with ISI.

If government firmly believes that there is no involvement of honorable Mr. Hussain Haqqani in memo sent to Adm. Mullen by Mr. Mansoor Ijaz, then govt should have submitted a simple few liner response to SCP.

Government should have responded that upon receiving information from ISI chief about memo, we called Mr. HH to Islamabad and asked if he has any involvement. Mr. HH declined and refused that he is not involved in any such matter. After that we ordered an enquiry and government asked Mr. HH to resign (or Mr. HH voluntarily resigned) to make enquiry transparent. But a petition was filed in Honorable Supreme Court so we withheld our enquiry process. Further we also believe that SC is not competent / right forum to hear the case and request to please refer this case to Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) to investigate.

Court might have referred to PCNS or could have ordered to form a judicial enquiry committee for digital forensic of electronic gadgets and Black Berry data. Eventually Mansoor Ijaz would have proven wrong and ISI chief’s moral position would have worsened.

Avoidance of this simple route by PPP government suggests either their advisors are not worthy enough or there is something fishy on the government side in memo case.
